RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN/CNN) — Subway, one of the world’s largest fast-food chains, continues to get smaller.
The restaurant reports that 1,000 stores have been closed over the past year.
According to a CNN report, the number may be more than that, due to Subway not disclosing how many new stores were opened. Some of the closed restaurants include locations that opened during the same year.
Subway is suffering from consumer food preference changes and a plethora of comparable competitors across the world.
CNN reports that the chain plans to remodel many of its stores with self-ordering kiosks, more comfortable seats, and USB charging ports.
Subway currently has 24,000 stores in the United States. The company has closed more stores than it has opened every year since 2016, according to CNN.
