RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A total of 16 places in North Carolina have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the state announced Monday.

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources said three districts and thirteen individual properties have been added to the national list.

The properties were reviewed by the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee and then approved by the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Officer.

The list was then sent to the Keeper of the National Register.

“North Carolina is a leader in the nation’s historic preservation movement and the National Register is a vital tool in the preservation of our state’s historic resources” said Susan Kluttz, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “These buildings and homes tell the North Carolina story and every effort should be made to preserve them. If we count all of the buildings classified as contributing to the significance of historic districts listed in the Register, it is estimated that North Carolina has approximately 75,000 National Register Properties.”

The North Carolina places added to the registry are:

  • Hanes Hosiery Mill, Ivy Avenue Plant, in Winston-Salem
  • John Chavis Memorial Park, in Raleigh
  • Mayodan Downtown Historic District in Mayodan
  • Nathaniel Jones Jr. House in Raleigh
  • Philip and Johanna Hoehns (Hanes) House in Clemmons
  • Western Electric Company, Tarheel Army Missile Plant, in Burlington
  • Cherryville Downtown Historic District in Cherryville
  • May Hosiery Mills Knitting Mill in Burlington
  • Richfield Milling Company in Richfield
  • St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg
  • Cleveland County Training School in Shelby
  • Davidson Elementary School in Kings Mountain
  • Berkeley Mills Ballpark in Hendersonville
  • Fountain Historic District in Fountain
  • Pleasant Plains School in Pleasant Plains
  • Burt-Arrington House in the Hilliardston vicinity

The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of buildings, structures, objects, sites, and districts worthy of preservation for their significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, and culture.
