LELAND, NC (WECT) – After spending 150 days in the hospital in one year, Eldon Self’s day got brighter when a special package showed up at his door.

The package was full of Carolina Panthers gear including a banner, shirt and signed photo of Cam Newton.

Eldon said his favorite gift was the Panthers pencil.

Eldon’s mother, Patricia, said she has no idea who contacted the Panthers to send the package.

Eldon has an underlying mitochondrial disorder. It affects his breathing, eating and hearing.

“It made me so happy because he’s in the hospital more than he’s home and getting stuck with needles and constantly getting procedures done,” Patricia said. “You see all that pain that he goes through and just to see him giggle and laugh and get so excited, it felt really good. It was refreshing.”

Patricia filmed Eldon opening the package for the first time and shared it on her Facebook page.

As of Thursday, the video had more than 18,000 views.

A letter from Ron Rivera thanked Eldon for his support and told him to never give up.

Eldon said he plans to follow the famous Panthers motto: keep pounding.
