NC cheerleading coach pleads guilty to sex charges involving children


MANTEO, N.C. (AP/WAVY-TV) – A former cheerleading and gymnastics coach from Kill Devil Hills has pleaded guilty to four counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

District Attorney Andrew Womble tells the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, that Russell “Rusty” Scherer, 40, was sentenced to an active maximum sentence of 32 months for one count of indecent liberties.

Womble says Scherer was given a suspended sentence for each of the other counts. The district attorney says Scherer faces supervised probation for three years when his active sentence ends.Previous story:NC cheer and gymnastics coach accused of sex crimes with 3 children

Investigators said when Scherer was arrested in September 2015 that he had operated or worked at several cheerleading businesses or sports clubs in Fletcher, Jarvisburg, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo and Nags Head.

When Kill Devil Hills Police arrested Scherer he was originally charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with children and one count of statutory sexual offense by an adult. The original arrest involved three child victims, according to police.

According to police at the time of the his arrest, Scherer had lived on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for about six years.— WAVY-TV contributed to this report
