NC dad with AR-15 was shot 9 times by policeman after chase, autopsy says

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP/WNCN) – A man killed by an Asheville police officer in July was shot nine times, including in the head, both legs and one arm, an autopsy report says.

The North Carolina Medical Examiner report obtained by the Asheville Citizen-Times says Jai “Jerry” Williams also was shot in the chest during the July 2 incident.

Williams, who died 10 days before his 36th birthday, had eight children and was employed by Skyland Distributing Company, his obituary said.

Asheville Police said Sgt. Tyler Radford shot Williams because he had a AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a woman in his car as he led officers on a chase to Deaverview Apartments.

Police also said the woman appeared to be struggling to get out of the vehicle.

Members of Black Lives Matter Asheville and other groups held a rally at the Asheville Police Department two days after the deadly shooting.

Family and friends say they want the truth, and continue to plan rallies and vigils until they get answers.

Williams was black, Radford is white.

The State Bureau of Investigation has turned its findings over to the district attorney, who will decide whether charges are filed.WSPA contributed to this report
