NC driver charged in crash that killed passenger

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – A driver has been charged after a man died in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 17 in Craven County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the collision on U.S. 17 on Sunday.

Officials said the vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet passenger vehicle, was traveling north on U.S. 17 operated by Zaire Firon Calvert, 21, of New Bern.  

Calvert ran off the road to the right and collided with a tree, officials said.

Calvert was transported from the scene by EMS to Carolina East Medical Center Emergency Room.

The front right passenger, Steven Andrett Richardson Jr., 22, of New Bern was trapped in the vehicle.

Richardson was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Richardson later died as a result of his injuries, officials said.

The driver was charged with the following:  

  • Driving while license revoked
  • Possession of a revoked license
  • Reckless driving
  • Failing to maintain lane
  • Failing to register the vehicle
  • Fictitious registration
  • No insurance
  • Unsafe Tires

Officials said that impairment was not suspected.
