NC hospital visits spike as more people ingest CBD oils, some contaminated

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A warning has been issued about potentially life-threating problems occurring as the result of using contaminated CBD oils.

The North Carolina Department Of Public Health says a spike in emergency room visits across North Carolina is behind the warning.

CBD oils are derived from the hemp plant.

Since December state officials say more than 30 people have shown up at emergency rooms suffering from major health issues related to the ingestion of CBD oils.

The state says many of the victims are vaping the CBD oils – using them in e-cigarettes.

In addition, a smaller number of the victims have put the oils in their food or taken it orally.

The state health director says the victims apparently aren’t using pure CBD oils, but rather substances that are contaminated.

“These CBD oils are not regulated and there are all sorts of other substances in them besides CBD oils. That’s probably what’s happening. There’s some contaminants giving people these symptoms,” says Dr. Elizabeth Tilson.

The symptoms are serious and vary, including:

  • seizures
  • altered mental status including hallucinations
  • rapid heartbeat or chest pains
  • breathing problems

Tilson calls the situation “pretty scary” and says it first surfaced among soldiers stationed in North Carolina and it quickly spread.

“First we got a signal from our military bases as they started to see an unusual number of cases. Then, through our work with poison control center and our epidemiology branch, we saw more ER visits and symptoms,” she said.

So far, no one has died as a result of the contaminated CBD oils situation and state health officials are hoping by publicizing this warning it can put the brakes on this problem.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
