NC man charged with animal cruelty after starving horses found eating tree bark

WAXHAW, N.C. (WBTV) – A man is facing animal cruelty charges after refusing to seek treatment for his horses, who were thin and roaming freely, deputies say.

Deputies say they were called to 47-year-old Benjamin Moore’s property on Waxhaw Highway last August after his horses were seen roaming in the roadway.

Deputies say the horses appeared thin and that Moore said he was supplementing their feed with grain.

Deputies advised Moore get the horses checked by a veterinarian, which they said he failed to do.

Last month, neighbors reported the horses appeared to be “starving” and were eating tree bark. The horses were also still able to get loose and in the roadway, as deputies say the pasture fencing was still not fixed.

“After ignoring repeated requests to have the horses examined by a vet, repairing the fence around the pasture and providing adequate food supply for the horses, deputies returned to Moore’s residence on January 17, 2019, with a search warrant and seized the horses,” deputies say.

Moore faces charges of animal cruelty and allowing livestock to roam freely.

The horses are being cared for by a local rescue.
