SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) — A teen who drowned in the waters of a quarry in eastern Rowan County Sunday afternoon has been identified as a student from East Rowan High School.

It’s the first day of school for his classmates and some of them stayed home today because of their grief, according to the parent of one teen who was swimming with the victim.

Authorities say 16-year-old Shavice Tandy got nearly halfway across the water in Balfour Quarry when he went under.

Dive teams responded to the search off Balfour Quarry Road and recovered Shavice’s body about 90 minutes after the initial call came in.

Several fire departments, the Rowan Rescue Squad, Rowan EMS, and the Rowan Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.

Neighbor Katheryn Stephens said her heart breaks for Shavice’s family. She lives across the street and says they often see cars parked near the main gravel entrance. There’s a gate people can climb under and “No Trespassing” painted on huge rocks.

“We see cars parked out along here all the time and unfortunately, we do call the police department because we know it’s very unsafe over there,” said Stephens.

Statements of those present indicate that the victim attempted to swim across the quarry, became fatigued and began to struggle in the water. He was last seen about 60 yards from the bank,” the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says.

A woman who identified herself as the property owner’s daughter said their “No Trespassing” signs often get taken down, the fence has been cut into, and security camera have not deterred trespassers.

The family member asked not to be identified. She said they work with the Sheriff’s Office often to remove trespassers. She said safety is their main concern.

“It’s beautiful, but dangerous,” she said, looking out over the quarry. The rock is covered with graffiti and littered with clothing and beer cans.

Evidence, she said, that people don’t keep out, even though its private property.
