NC teen killed, 3-year-old injured in shooting; 1 suspect dead, 1 in custody

HICKORY, N.C. (WBTV) – A suspect was arrested early Friday morning in a shooting that killed a 16-year-old, injured a 3-year-old and riddled several cars with bullets at an apartment complex Thursday night.

Sixteen-year-old Devin O’Dariess Lee later died from injuries related to the shooting that happened at the Blue Ridge Apartments on 1st Street, according to Hickory police. The 3-year-old who was caught in the crossfire and struck by a bullet fragment remains in stable condition and is expected to be OK.

Officials say when they arrived on the scene the victims were not there and had been taken to the hospital in a car.

Frye Regional Medical Center was placed on lockdown as a crowd gathered outside of the hospital.

The two victims did not know each other and officials say they believe Lee was the intended target.

At the same time, police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old who was found with a self-inflicted wound in Burke County. Just before 9 p.m., Hickory police say they received a call that Zamare Nadja Davidson, a suspect in the shooting, was dead.

Police say they believe the shooting is a result of an argument between Davidson and Lee.

A second suspect, Jonathan Laxton, was taken into custody at a home in Burke County. Laxton was charged with one count of accessory after the fact. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday, May 3.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 828-328-5551.
