MILL SPRING, N.C. (WSPA) — Troopers say a truck driver has been charged in a crash that claimed the life of a Rutherford County woman.

The victim has been identified as Lindsay Cooper, 30, of Rutherfordton.

Master Trooper Murico Stephens said Cooper was driving a Nissan Sentra when she crashed into the back of a box truck.

The wreck happened on westbound U.S. 74 near Highway 9 in Polk County on Monday morning.

Cooper died at the scene of the crash.

Troopers say the driver of the box truck, identified as Alfredo Baute, 51, of Charlotte, stopped the truck for unknown reasons.

Baute was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and illegally stopping in the roadway, according to troopers.

Westbound U.S. 74 was blocked near Highway 9 shortly before 10 a.m. Monday.

Polk County 911 Communications Center asked people to avoid the area earlier Monday.
