BESSEMER CITY, N.C. (WBTV) - A man intentionally drove an SUV into a restaurant in Gaston County killing two people -- including his daughter -- and injuring at least a dozen others during lunchtime Sunday, officials and sources said.
The incident happened just after noon in the 800 block of North 14th Street in Bessemer City at the Surf and Turf restaurant.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a preliminary investigation indicates the incident was domestic related.
Police said the driver of the Jeep SUV was the father of a woman, Katelyn Self, who was killed in the incident.
Sources told WBTV that the driver of the SUV came into the restaurant with his family, got up and left, and then drove his car into the building, WBTV reported.
Katelyn Self, 26, was as a deputy for the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, where she had worked for four year, authorities said.
"This young lady started off as a detention officer, worked her way up to deputy. She was off duty at the time that she lost her life -- tragic, tragic loss of life," Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger said of Katelyn Self.
Police said in a news conference Sunday afternoon that the vehicle was completely inside the restaurant after the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, Roger Self, was taken into custody and later charged with first-degree murder, officials said.
The identity of the other person who died has not been released.
A WBTV reporter tweeted: "Family members say their loved one has died in the attack."
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Gastonia Fire Department are assisting Bessemer City Fire Department on the scene.
