Intruder at NC garden center shot, killed by store owner, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Police are conducting a homicide investigation in east Charlotte.

According to a report from CMPD, officials responded to a report of a commercial breaking and entering at the American Beauty and Garden Center located in the 4400 block of E. Independence Boulevard around 4:33 a.m. Around the same time, an individual called 911 advising that he spotted a person inside the business by watching a security camera and was responding to the scene, officials say.

The individual called back shortly after and told the 911 operator that he had just shot someone at the store.

Upon arrival, officials say they located a male victim behind the business as well as the owner who reportedly shot him. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic. His identity will be released after notifying the family.

CMPD says it appears the victim entered the business by smashing the front glass window. When the owner of the business arrived on the scene, the individual who broke into the store ran out of the front door before he was shot.

The victim ran behind the the business which is where he was located when officers arrived. Officials have not said if the alleged shooter was taken into custody and if any charges will be filed.
