NC deputies ID man, woman killed in apparent murder-suicide

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Deputies have identified the people involved in a possible murder-suicide reported Monday night on Whitehurst Lane near Greenville.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office says at 9:53 PM on Monday, deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Whitehurst Lane, located northeast of Greenville off Hwy 264.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found two victims with gunshot wounds.

Paramedics who responded to the scene determined both of the victims were dead.

The victims were identified as 25-year-old Laura Caitlyn Whitehurst and 26-year-old Christopher Levon Garris.

According to deputies, it appears that Garris shot Whitehurst and then turned the gun on himself.

An investigation showed that they were in a relationship but were separated and at one point they were living together.

No apparent domestic situations between the two before the incident.

Deputies said Whitehurst was in a vehicle when she was shot and Garris may have been in the area before the shooting occurred.

Investigators say the deaths are being investigated as a possible case of murder-suicide, but a final determination has not yet been made.
