KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) - A man in his 60s was pronounced dead after lifeguards pulled him from the ocean and tried to save his life Saturday afternoon.
According to officials in Kill Devil Hills, the man was reported missing in the surf around 12:15 p.m. He was later spotted in the water off of Fourth Street and was unable to return to shore.
Lifeguards entered the water around Second Street to save him. The swimmer was unresponsive and CPR was initiated.
The man was later transported to Outer Banks Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, officials say.
Red flags were posted on the beaches, indicating the water was not safe for swimming. The Ocean Rescue Division of the Kill Devils Hills Fire Department is encouraging everyone to stay out of the water.
