CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – The University of North Carolina’s oldest living athlete is walking 16 miles — through the system’s 16 campuses.

The initiative called “16 for 16” is sponsored by UNC Walk for Health to raise awareness for chronic health conditions.

Bobby Gersten is from the class of 1942. Now 95, he exercises daily and walked a mile around a Carolina track on Monday.

“Keep busy, keep moving in everything you do that makes you move your joints and your body and everything, it’s good for you.  Don’t sit around if you have the choice, do something!” Gersten said.

Gersten played basketball at Carolina and has continued to be a part of the university’s athletic program — including being instrumental in bringing Dean Smith to UNC.
