JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina have identified a woman whose remains were found more than 23 years ago.

The Jacksonville Police Department says on its Facebook page that Stacey Boothe-Wilson was a former Marine who was discharged in August 1994, when she separated from her husband and moved back to Greenburgh, New York with her three children.

Boothe-Wilson was 33 when she was reported missing in October 1994. Her remains was found near a Jacksonville fitness center in December 1995.

Chief Mike Yaniero says a possible DNA match came back in January from a national database for missing persons. The medical examiner then confirmed the match.

Officials say it’s not known how Boothe-Wilson died, it’s believed her death was not accidental because of where her remains were found.
