6-year-old girl injured by gunfire when 10 shots fired at cookout, police say

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 6-year-old girl was shot in the leg while at a cookout Saturday night, according to police. 

It happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 5600 block of Arlington Avenue. 

The girl was taken to a local hospital after police responded to the scene. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening. 


Witnesses told police there was a cookout happening at the location where the victim was found. They also said about 10 gunshots were heard. 

The mother of the victim said the victim has a birthday in August. 

There is no suspect information at this time.
