ATLANTA – A man who U.S. Marshals said murdered his mother in Georgia is currently on the run.

Richard V. Merritt removed his ankle monitor before killing his mom in MerrittKalb County, officials said.

Merritt is a disbarred attorney who was being monitored by law enforcement. He was scheduled to surrender to authorities Feb. 1 after being sentenced to 30 years in jail in Cobb County.

He faced prison time after being convicted of stealing money from clients and elder abuse.

Merritt’s elderly mother was found dead on Feb. 2. The U.S. Marshals Service said she had been “violently killed.”

Merritt’s vehicle was left at the scene but his mother’s car was gone.

The vehicle he may be driving is a 2009 silver Lexus RX350, bearing a Georgia tag CBV 6004.

He may have shaved his head or otherwise changed his appearance and should be considered armed and dangerous.

There is no information connecting Merritt to Eastern North Carolina.

Do not try to engage him.  If you see Merritt, please contact law enforcement immediately.
