CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) —  Authorities in Chesterfield have identified the body of a man whose remains were discovered in March 2016 near the James River.

A man fishing near the 1300 Block of Bellwood Road found a body along the bank of the river and called police.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS personnel assisted with the recovery.

After being unable to identify the body, investigators reached out to a DNA technology company, Parabon NanoLabs, which used a genetic genealogy analysis to help Chesterfield Police in its investigation.

Genealogy research tests and the investigation from Chesterfield Police led to investigators to identify the man as 39-year-old Hassan A. Alkebu-Lan, police said.

While there are no signs of foul play, investigators are still working to determine the cause of death.
