Driver charged with felony DUI after teen girl dies in SC crash

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – South Carolina Highway Patrol officials charged a 17-year-old girl following a deadly crash early Tuesday morning near Honea Path.

According to SCHP Lance Cpl. Justin Sutherland, a 2012 Kia was traveling west on Latimer Mill Road at around 2:50 a.m. near Prospect Bridge Road approximately four miles north of Honea Path.

The Kia then crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road, went down an embankment and overturned, officials said

Sutherland said three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The driver, identified as Savannah Hutchinson, 17, of Honea Path, was not wearing a seat belt, was injured and taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Sutherland said the first passenger in the vehicle died after being ejected from the vehicle, and was not wearing a seat belt.

Greenville County Coroner Kent Dill identified the deceased female passenger as Dayton Gayle Sellers, 18, of Donalds.

Dill confirmed Sellers was partially ejected from the vehicle, and said she died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Her manner of death was deemed an accident.

The third passenger, an 18-year-old girl from Honea Path, was not wearing a seat belt, was injured and was taken to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Sutherland said Hutchinson was charged with felony DUI involving a death.

The crash is still under investigation by the highway patrol’s MAIT team.
