SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man is facing charges for allegedly assaulted two officers while trying to carjack a marked police vehicle in Suffolk over the weekend.

Suffolk Police said the alleged April 27 incident came after a suspect forced his way into a 72-year-old’s car and tried to rob her at a 7-Eleven on Holland Road.

The woman was able to sound her car’s alarm, and the suspect fled. She was uninjured in the incident and provided officers a description of the suspect, police said.

An officer then found a suspect walking in a nearby neighborhood and tried to take him into custody.

Police said this suspect, 37-year-old Timothy Dawson Jr., assaulted the officer and tried to flee.

The officer commanded Dawson to stop and threatened to release his K-9. Dawson allegedly tried to prevent this and then tried to get into the driver’s side of the police vehicle while assaulting the officer, police said.

The officer released his K-9 from the back of the vehicle, and Dawson allegedly struck the dog in the head multiple times. Other officers responded and were able to remove him from the vehicle, and Dawson allegedly assaulted a second officer, police said.

Police charged Dawson with strong armed robbery, three counts of assault and battery – police officer or firefighter, carjacking, resisting arrest – obstruct justice, two counts of killing or injuring police animal, destruction of property, disorderly conduct and fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

Dawson is being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
