The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two siblings accused of beating up their grandmother and great-uncle for money.
Angel Jose Mariani, 23, and Monique Mariani, 20, were both arrested and charged with assault/battery on person 65 or older among other charges. Investigators say the siblings had been living in a tent behind their family members’ home.
On Dec. 21, Angel Mariani confronted his great-uncle after learning he had given other relatives some money. When his great-uncle refused to give him money too, Mariani began punching him multiple times. The victim fled to a shed nearby, according to the report.
A short time later, investigators say Angel and Monique approached their grandmother to get to their great-uncle, who was still inside the shed. When she asked them to leave, they started punching and kicking her.
A witness tried to intervene, but was also battered by Angel, investigators said.
Angel then forced his way into the shed and started vandalizing items.
Deputies said the three individuals “sustained various injuries from the suspects,” but the extent of their injuries was not disclosed.
When deputies arrived, the siblings had already left the residence along with their sister who is a minor. Deputies located the trio at the intersection of Parlow Avenue and Toucan Trail in Spring Hill., and said Angel gave them a false name and fled the area on foot.
Officers set up a perimeter and deployed K-9 and air units, which found Angel hiding in some shrubs nearby.
After leading officers on a short foot chase and becoming combative, deputies say Angel was stunned with a taser.
“Once in custody, Angel continued to make threats of violence toward all deputies present,” the arrest report states.
Angel Mariani was arrested for domestic battery, battery, assault/battery on person 65 or older, battery on law enforcement officer, resisting officer with violence, criminal mischief, threats to public official, resisting officer without violence, providing false name to law enforcement.
Monique Mariani was arrested for assault/battery on person 65 or older.
The minor was arrested on an active Hernando County warrant for failure to appear on a charge of burglary.
All three siblings were booked into the Hernando County Detention Center. Further information was not immediately available.
NOTE: The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office previously identified one of the victims as the siblings’ grandfather, but News Channel 8’s Jeff Patterson spoke to the victim, who identified himself as their great-uncle. The agency has not issued a corrected release.
