NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News, Virginia police officer is facing multiple charges in connection to an alleged past sexual assault of a juvenile.
Newport News police said in a news release Friday the department received a complaint on June 6, 2018, regarding a past sexual assault.
Police arrested 46-year-old Robert Jones Friday on two counts of rape, carnal knowledge, forcible sodomy, four counts of taking indecent liberties and criminal solicitation.
The charges against Jones came following a “thorough investigation” by the NNPD Special Victims Unit and Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, police said.
Chief Steve Drew said in a statement Friday, “We take these allegations very seriously and are working closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office regarding the criminal charges. In addition, the Department has been conducting an extensive administrative investigation regarding the officer involved.”
Drew addressed members of the media in a news conference Friday afternoon at the police department’s headquarters. WAVY app users can watch the entire news conference at this link.
Drew did not go into specific details about the number of alleged incidents – and when they happened – but he said the victim, a female, was a juvenile at the time.
“No one likes to see someone in this profession do something or be alleged of doing something of a criminal intent,” Drew said. “It hurts relationships, it hurts the organization and hurts this profession.”
Jones, who has been with the department since 2007 and is assigned to the North Precinct, has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the results of the administrative investigation.
Jones is the third officer in the Hampton Roads region to have been charged with a crime this week, and the second one accused of sexual assault.
Mark David Johnson, a former officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, was arrested Wednesday and charged with forcible sodomy of a minor. In Norfolk, Francis Bodner was charged with stalking, possession of stolen property and computer trespassing.
