Surf City to use recycled Christmas trees to repair sand dunes

News

SURF CITY, N.C. (WECT) – Surf City is collecting natural Christmas trees to help repair sand dunes that were washed out by Hurricane Florence.

“It’s really important for this year because of being hit by that storm,” Parks and Recreation director Chad Merritt said. “We’ve lost so much beach. Anything that we can do right now is a big help.”

To participate, take your Christmas tree to the former Town Hall site on 214 North New River Drive. Be sure to remove all ornaments, lights and other decorations before dropping trees off.

City officials plan to start asking private beach house owners if they can put Christmas trees in their dunes. In the meantime, they will start putting Christmas trees on the public dunes to help them build more quickly.
