INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (WBTV) – An investigation is underway involving a child’s death in Indian Trail on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred off of Senconee Drive near Potter Road. Deputies reported that the child was a 3 or 4-year-old boy and that this was being considered a “suspicious death” at this time.
“There is no obvious cause of death to us just from a physical examination but at this point, we have to treat it as just a suspicious death,” said Tony Underwood with the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
The child’s mother had arrived at the house to pick up her son when she found him in his room and called police with reports of “cardiac arrest.” The call came in around 12:40 p.m. and EMS confirmed that the child had died at the scene.
“We don’t know if it’s a crime at this point or a natural death. Small children don’t usually die naturally unless there is some preexisting condition or some horrific accident so we just don’t know at this point,” said Underwood.
The child’s father, who resided at the home, was arrested during the incident on outstanding warrants for unrelated charges.
Neighbors at the scene said that they knew the father of the child who lived at the home and that their thoughts and prayers were for the child’s mother.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the matter and no further information has been released at this time.
