Showing politician are not immune to clumsiness, Gov. Pat McCrory took a stumble ahead of a roundtable discussion in Durham on Tuesday. But his quick-witted recovery showed all the grace of a seasoned politician.

While taking a seat at the start of a roundtable discussion and announcement of a new partnership at the Durham Innovation District, the governor’s chair slipped out from under him, sending him crashing to the floor.

With a big grin on his face, McCrory got up off the ground, proudly stood with his arms outstretched and exclaimed, “Ta-da!”

The governor laughed, “These things have got wheels on them.”

He said in his 20 years in public office, he’d never taken a stumble in front of cameras.

“That has never happened.” He quipped, “In Durham.”

The Durham Innovation District is a 15-acre, $500 million project that’s attracting new talent to the state and helping to revitalize Durham.

On Tuesday, the Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative announced it will move off the Duke campus and occupy 15,000 square feet on the third floor of the Imperial Building at the Innovation District.
