WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WNCN) — Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump received a warm reception in Winston-Salem on Monday.
He was quick to address critics who say he portrays too bleak a picture of the country – he says he’s not because he’s optimistic he can turn things around.
Trump was unabashedly Trump on Monday night — tackling topics from “Obamacare” to foreign policy to trade.
“Look I deal at the highest levels of other countries and they can’t believe how stupid we are and they tell me they’re friends of mine,” Trump said.
Fresh off the Republican National Convention last week – Trump was quick to pounce on Clinton and her choice of running mate – senator Tim Kaine.
“She picked somebody who was wrong. So they’re having massive protests over there. Now you heard that was going to happen with the Republican convention and we had a great convention by the way,” Trump said.
The Republican Presidential nominee joined at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds by his running mate – Mike Pence.
And for the first time on the campaign trail by NC Governor Pat McCrory.
“We believe in NC that there should be no such thing as sanctuary cities. No sanctuary cities in NC. We need a president who believes there should be no sanctuary cities in the USA,” McCrory said.
“We are going to make our country so great again, so safe again, so strong again. You’re going to be so proud of your president. So proud of your country again,” Trump said.
The latest CNN poll shows Trump five points up on Clinton and he called on voters here to help him stay ahead.
Trump will speak in Charlotte on Tuesday at the same VFW event that Hillary Clinton spoke at Monday.
Trump says he plans to make North Carolina a frequent stop before November.
