CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — For the first time UNC Chapel Hill student stores are now being run by a private company.
Barnes and Noble College is managing the stores…that have been run by the university since 1915.
The agreement is a 10-year, $30 million deal.
Some had voiced concerns about the impact of privatizing the stores.
“It’s an easy way to punt instead of solving problems is to say I’m going to find someone to contract with outside who will perform this function and I bet they do it more cheaply,” said Ardis Watkins of the State Employees Association of NC.
“We’re definitely here to service the campus in any capacity that we can. Student affordability in their course materials is first and foremost in our mind,” said Michele Gretch Carter, the UNC Student Stores general manager.
Barnes and Noble College says it’s offering students a 10 percent discount on new and used textbooks.
