US sues, claiming strollers are unsafe

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The U.S. government is suing the maker of a popular jogging stroller saying it’s unsafe.

Close to half million of the BOB jogging strollers are on the market and the government says if they fail, they’ll cause serious injuries to children and the adults using them.

This complaint against Britax Child Safety, Inc. claims the design some of the strollers allows people to use them without the front wheel being properly secured allowing that wheel to detach during use.

The complaint alleges that allows the stroller’s fork to dig into the ground causing it to stop abruptly causing injuries to children and the adults using it.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission claims stroller failures have resulted in a variety of injuries to children including:

  • A concussion
  • Injuries to the head and face requiring stitches
  • Dental injuries, contusions and abrasions

The commission says adult injuries include:

  • Bone fractures
  • Torn ligaments
  • Contusions and abrasions

The CPSC says its logged Over 90 injury reports since 2012.

It wanted the 17 models of the strollers made between 2011 and 2015 recalled and said when the company refused-it decided to sue.

In a statement to CBS North Carolina the company said “there is no defect in the product” and “the stroller is safe when used as instructed.”

A company spokeswoman referred CBS North Carolina to various instructional videos on its website which show how to properly adjust and use the strollers.

The company says “the quick release wheel is a widely used feature with a history dating back decades.”

CBS North Carolina talked to several women, including Elaine Dellanoce, who were using the BOB’s strollers at a local park.

Dellanoce has owned two BOB’s strollers and as a certified running coach teaches a course to mothers on how to properly jog with a stroller. (link to course website )

She says she made sure her BOB’s strollers got lots of routine maintenance…

“I would take it to the bike shops to have it looked at,” she said because the detachable wheel is similar to ones used on bikes.

When CBS North Carolina told her about the lawsuit she said she wasn’t worried about her BOB’s stroller.

“I think BOB’S is an excellent stroller and if the mom’s read their handbook and weight them properly it can be a really safe stroller,” she said.

Meanwhile, the government says in its lawsuit it wants the company to repair the defects in the strollers, or replace them with new ones that aren’t defective and refund the purchase prices.
