Wake Forest wins state title over Vance, 9-7

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — For the third straight season, the Wake Forest High School football team played for a state title.

The other two occasions had happy endings for the Cougars.

Coach Reggie Lucas and the guys took the field Friday evening against the same team that they opened the 7-on-7 season against – Vance.

The guys from Charlotte got the scoring started. On the second play from scrimmage, Vance went up-top for a 53-yard score.

But the Cougars know how to find the end zone too.

Later in the first, Maquell Haywood got hit at the goal line and fell forward to tie the game.

Still tied at 7, with less than a minute to go in the game, the go-ahead Wake Forest field goal was blocked.

It looked like the worst thing that could happen for a team, but Vance fumbled the snap at their own goal line, and they were tackled for a safety.

Wake Forest won the state 4AA championship on a defensive score with the final, 9-7.
