CBD oil for pets a growing industry, but veterinarians warn it’s not for every pet

Pets and Animals

LOS ANGELES (CBS NEWS) — As more states legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, some companies are now marketing cannabis products for your pets, but veterinarians caution the supplements aren’t necessarily a good fit for every animal.

A two and a half-year-old dog named Kogi is very attached to his family and doesn’t like it when he’s left alone — he gets anxious says his owner.

“It’s worse when we both leave together,” says Kelly Alto refereeing to her fiancé who also lives in the same home as Kogi.

Alto says she conducted a lot of online research into pet separation anxiety which led her and her fiancé to try hemp oil, a cannabis-based supplement for pets.

“Before using it, we would be able to hear him like squealing and barking and jumping up and scratching on the door,” he said. “Since using it we would be able to get down the hall and not hear him freaking out.”

She told CBS News Kogi gets a small amount of the treatment oil.

“The dose that we give him is two to three drops,” she said.

Several companies are now making pet products that use CBD, which is one of the active ingredients found in hemp and cannabis plants.

The companies make health claims saying the products will relieve pain and anxiety and reducing seizures in epileptic animals.

The products do not contain THC, which gives marijuana its psychoactive effects.

Holistic veterinarian Jonathan Salkind told CBS News he doesn’t prescribe cannabis to his clients believing more research is needed and says pet owners should keep in mind the FDA has not approved those products for animals.

As there’s more money in cannabis and marijuana I think we’ll get better studies which can really show us what the potential is,” said Dr. Salkind. “There is potential, but it’s early.”

The American Kennel Club says there are known side effects from CBD Oils on dogs

  • Dry mouth
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Drowsiness

But, Alto believes the effects for her dog have been positive so far.

Because CBD products are made from hemp, not marijuana, they are legal in every state.

Many of those pet products can be found online.
