Wilson K-9 dies after last shift before retirement

WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) - The Wilson Police Department announced Friday on Facebook that one of its K-9s died.

Dakota worked his last shift Thursday night before retirement, the post said. Then, Friday morning, Officer Cotton noticed something was wrong with Dakota.

The officer took Dakota to the veterinarian, and he passed away.

"Dakota protected his handler and his community faithfully for 11 years," the post said of the 11-year-old dog. "He was loved by his family, the department, and the many children he touched through countless K-9 demonstrations and community events he participated in."
