Staal’s overtime goal, Mrazek’s shutout lift ‘Canes to Game 1 win over Islanders

Carolina Hurricanes

NEW YORK (WNCN) – The New York Islanders were sure they scored on two different occasions Friday night in Game 1 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Neither of those chances counted, and the Hurricanes again needed overtime to find a win.

Jordan Staal scored at the 4:04 mark of overtime to give the Hurricanes their second-straight road win of the postseason. They played more than 30 minutes of overtime hockey in Wednesday’s Game 7 win over Washington.

Carolina lost its first three games on the road.

The Islanders had a second-period goal called off due to goaltender interference on Anders Lee. Then, in the third period, Ryan Pulock rocket a point shot toward the net on the power play. The fans at the Barclays Center thought it went in, but the puck was lodged on the outside of the net.

Petr Mrazek also robbed Josh Bailey on a first-period breakaway.

That wasn’t Mrazek’s only dazzling stop in his 31-save shutout. Robin Lehner made 31 stops on 32 shots.
