DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The Durham Bulls were set to resume its series versus the Norfolk Tides Friday night, but the team has since postponed the game in light of pitcher Tyler Zombro being hit by a batted ball Thursday night.

Dozens of Durham bulls fans were surprised to learn Friday nights game was cancelled, they lined up at the ticket booth to find out what that means for their ticket purchase.

“I moved here three weeks ago this was going to be my first game out here so I was pretty excited,” said Danny Crawford.

According to a statement from the Bulls’ major league affiliate the Tampa Bay Rays, Zombro remains in the care of nurses and doctors at Duke University Hospital.

“The updates from overnight have been positive and he remains in stable condition,” the team said.

Zombro was hit in the 8th inning and started convulsing on Thursday after throwing just five pitches in a 12-4 game favoring the Tides.

“I’ve been watching baseball for many years and there’s not been many injuries that have ever stopped a baseball game before so hearing that happened is really upsetting I hope he recovers,” said Joseph Horton.

One man who was parking operation cars during the game caught the aftermath.

“I witnessed all the paramedics around here and I saw him on the stretcher. It was shocking to everyone, heck it was really shocking to me,” said Jan Cromartie, a Durham County employee.

Many other minor league baseball teams reached out to the Bulls via Twitter, offering thoughts and well wishes for Zombro.

“Obviously we’re praying for him and his family, the most important thing is for him to be ok so that’s ok we can catch another game,” said Ashley Floyd.

Many fans also say a closer look at safety equipment in the future may help.

Fans say they were told their tickets will be honored at the makeup game, it’s unclear exactly when that will be.

Zombro had posted a 1-1 record on the season with a 3.18 earned run average.

He was assigned to the Bulls on April 30 from the Montgomery Biscuits.

The Bulls say a makeup date for the game has yet to be announced.
