Sophomore Derek Coombs drove Holly Springs’ offense in a 24-14 win over Garner Magnet that gave the Golden Hawks their first conference championship in program history.
This all coming a year after a two-win season for Holly Springs.
Coombs combined strength and speed in running in two touchdowns. One of them, a 50-yard burst, required him to break a tackle in the backfield before he ever got going.
Trojan quarterback Nolan McClean was the spark for the visitors’ offense. He rolled out and found senior tight end Spencer Stephenson for a touchdown in the first half.
Holly Springs finished the season 5-0 in 4-A Southern Wake action.
