UNC sweeps Stetson to advance to College World Series

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN/AP) - The UNC Tar Heels are headed back to the College World Series for the first time since 2013 after defeating Stetson 7-5 on Saturday.

UNC swept Stetson in the Super Regional best-of-three series Friday and Saturday.

North Carolina jumped on Stetson starter Jack Perkins in a four-run first inning on Saturday.

Cody Roberts, Brandon Riley and Ashton McGee had RBI doubles in that first inning for the host Tar Heels (43-18), the No. 6 national seed.

Reliever Caden O'Brien (6-0) earned the win, while UNC finished with 14 hits.

Jonathan Meola and Andrew MacNeil each hit solo home runs for the Hatters (48-13), the No. 11 national seed. Stetson had 13 hits but struggled with runners in scoring position for the second straight day.

Perkins (11-3) took the loss, allowing six runs and nine hits in 2 1/3 innings - his shortest outing of the year.

The Tar Heels are the first team to advance to the 2018 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The win Saturday came after a 7-4 win over Stetson on Friday by the Tar Heels.
