CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN)– No. 5 North Carolina used hot hitting and a strong outing by freshman pitcher Will Sandy to down Xavier 12-3 in Chapel Hill Friday afternoon.
The win extends the Tar Heels’ home winning streak to 19 games. Sandy allowed only one hit and no runs while fanning five batters in 4.2 innings. He is the first freshman to earn a win in a season opener since 2010.
Junior Ike Freeman was big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a solo home run and 4 RBIs.
The 12 runs scored by the Tar Heels is the most in a season opener since UNC scored 13 in a 13-3 win against VMI in 2009.
