A high school student was killed in a Polk County crash that seriously injured two others late last week.

Authorities confirm Markell Lipscomb, 17, was fatally injured in the crash early Friday afternoon on Pea Ridge Road in Mill Spring.

Lipscomb, of Tryon, was a rising senior at Polk County High School.

Principal Dr. Brandon Schweitzer said Lipscomb is remembered as a “talented athlete and a friend to many at our school.”

A memorial service for Lipscomb is planned from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Polk County High School.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a driver lost control of a vehicle, ran off the road and crashed into a tree.  The car came to rest on its side, according to images from the crash scene.

Lipscomb was a passenger among three people who were in the vehicle at the time of the wreck.

The other passenger and the driver, also both 17, were seriously injured in the wreck, WLOS-TV reported.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation as of Monday morning, officials said.
