Some 1,500 roads were closed across North Carolina after Hurricane Florence dumped record rain on the Carolinas and killed at least 31 people.

Video provided by North Carolina’s Division of Aviation showed a section of Interstate 40 in Duplin County flooded, with water completely covering lanes of roads.

Local media reported that large sections of the highway were closed in the wake of Hurricane Florence, which dumped up to 36 inches of rain in North Carolina since Sept. 14.

North Carolina’s transportation department tweeted the footage, adding that it “illustrates our message that travel in the area is impassable and unsafe”.
