Michael triggers mudslide across road in NC mountains

FAIRVIEW, N.C. (WSPA) - A landslide cleanup was underway in Buncombe County at Old Fort Road on Thursday.

N.C. DOT crews responded to the scene around 1 p.m.

Officials said water came rushing down the cliff side, bringing mud and debris with it and knocking down power lines.

Old Fort Road at Major Mountain Road was impassible for several hours.

Crews say once they got the mudslide cleaned up they realized a storm drainage nearby, was washed out and now they have no option but to replace it.

“They are in the process of digging... making preparations so they can get it up, replace that tomorrow in a timely manner and not close the road any longer than they have to," Broad River Fire Department Assistant Chief Bruce Cook said.

As of 7 p.m. Thursday the road was still blocked off to traffic.
